Vereki Martiano

Experimental Folk Music

I AM

Vereki Martiano is an Indonesian musician, composer, and cultural researcher with a profound background in ethnic music, specifically rooted in the sonic traditions of Minangkabau and the Riau Islands. He dedicates his entire creative energy to artistic innovations that deeply deconstruct traditional soundscapes. By merging the organic mysticism of indigenous percussive, wind, and plucked instruments with modern sound design, he has forged a distinctive new direction within the realm of Experimental Folk Music.

Throughout his expansive landscape of sonic exploration, Vereki actively channels and challenges his aesthetic ideas through various collaborative music groups that transcend traditional boundaries. He navigates these realms of creative exploration and art activism alongside Sago Art Minangkabau, Riuh Petuah, Orkes Merantau, and Kacubuang Art, each serving as a dynamic platform for reinterpreting and reimagining folk sounds.

Serving as the primary epicenter of his creative movements and experimental laboratory, he founded the Vic Art Project in 2017. This experimental collective and creative hub operates actively across two vital cultural nodes: Pariaman in West Sumatra and Batam in the Riau Islands. Through the Vic Art Project, his focus is sharply directed toward navigating the thin threshold between profane ancestral roots and futuristic electronic music. Via this innovative medium, Vereki successfully bridges the technical precision of Western audio engineering with the profound depth of Eastern sonic philosophy. The ultimate result of this radical fusion is a progressive wave of folk music that is hypnotic and entirely liberated from conventional traditional boundaries, yet remains fiercely capable of preserving the nobility and purity of its primal traditional spirit.
